Braves sweep Marlins in historic doubleheader with first female umpire

ATLANTA (AP) — In the first major league game to be officiated by a female umpire, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 8–6 on Saturday night, led by two home runs from Marcell Ozuna.

Jen Pawol played at first base in the first game and third base in the nightcap. When the umpires were presented throughout both games, she was given a standing ovation. MLB declared in between games that the National Baseball Hall of Fame will receive her cap from the opening game.

Hurston Waldrep, a rookie, had a great game, and Michael Harris II hit a crucial three-run home run to help the Braves win the first game 7-1.

For the first time in his three Braves outings, Erick Fedde (4-12) prevailed in the second game. Raisel Iglesias recorded his 16th save with a perfect 9.

Ozuna helped the Braves overcome a 4-0 deficit with a solo blast in the fourth and a three-run homer an inning later.

Drake Baldwin, the catcher, had three RBIs and was 2 for 5. In the first game, he was the DH and had two RBIs.

Both of Ozuna’s home runs were among the five runs that Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-11) allowed in five innings. He reached an ERA of 6.55.

The Marlins’ Heriberto Hernandez and Xavier Edwards each recorded two RBIs.

Jakob Marsee, a rookie, had two walks and two hits. In his first ten games in the major leagues, he is hitting.448.

The Braves took their first lead at 5-4 after Ozuna hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning. It ended a four-run inning after traveling 416 feet to the left.

Key stat

In 10 of his 23 outings this season, including five of his past eight, Alcantara has allowed at least five runs.

Up next

On Sunday, Marlins RHP Cal Quantrill (4-9, 5.21) will face LHP Joey Wentz (2-3, 5.34) to wrap out the five-game series.
