Battery explosion damages La Jolla apartment building

Lithium-ion batteries exploded in a utility closet Thursday, filling many apartments on the ground floor of a La Jolla apartment complex with heavy smoke.

According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews were called to the scene of an explosion in the 7500 block of La Jolla Blvd. at around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke emanating from an unknown number of units on the first floor. They found the batteries as they started looking around the structure.

According to officials, the department’s prompt response time meant that the damage was minor.

Although there were no early reports of casualties, a San Diego County Hazardous Materials team was sent to help with the endeavor.
