Aw shucks! National Oyster Day is Tuesday, Aug. 5

Oysters will be honored on August 5th, National Oyster Day, whether you like them or not.

You can also raise a shell to mess things up in San Diego. These restaurants offer oysters in a range of styles, from Cajun flair to Argentine elegance and traditional coastal vibes, whether you prefer them raw, grilled, or dressed to impress.

The Duck Dive, a relaxed, surf-themed bar within a short distance from the beach, serves oysters and surf sup. Try the Indulgent Oysters Rockefeller, which is broiled and garnished with golden breadcrumbs, pepper jack cheese, spicy chipotle, fresh spinach, and exquisite shrimp. Or go for the traditional Oysters on the Halfshell, which come with cocktail sauce and a jalapeño citrus mignonette. Seize a beverage, relax in the California sunshine, and get started.

With a menu that emphasizes the robust, smoky tastes of wood-fired cooking, Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters in La Jolla Shores offers a stylish coastal setting. With a crisp white or sparkling from the well chosen wine selection, the freshly shucked oysters on the half shell are presented ice-cold with tangy mignonette, bullwhip spicy sauce, and a cool squeeze of lemon. Seven days a week, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the oysters are always available at happy hour.

At Piedra Santa, Little Italy’s newest culinary destination, Argentina meets the Pacific. The restaurant specializes in open-fire grilling and sophisticated coastal flavors, and the Fresh Oysters are no exception. Try them raw with creamy mustard, atomic horseradish, and Champagne mignonette for a strong, salty bite. Indulge in a mezcal or smokey Malbec cocktail to enjoy the tango of flavors.

Louisiana Purchase captures the essence of New Orleans in the center of San Diego with its soulful, spicy, and Southern swagger. The Acme Chargrilled Oysters are a magical combination of garlic-lemon butter, bubbling Parmesan, and plump Gulf oysters caressed by an open flame. The California touch on Bourbon Street extravagance has palates hankering after more.

The oyster scene in San Diego will be robust on National Oyster Day, regardless of your preference for half-shells, grill-and-butter, or something in between.
