Attorneys for husband of missing Chula Vista mother seek murder trial move

Larry Millete’s lawyers said Monday they would try to have his murder trial moved out of Chula Vista. Millete is the man accused of killing his wife, May Maya Millete, who went missing.

Although Millete’s trial is still scheduled to start in January of next year, it will take place at one of the other courthouses in San Diego County if his attorneys’ motion for a change of venue is approved.

Later this month, Millete’s lawyers are anticipated to submit the change of venue move, which will result in a hearing on their request in August.

On Monday, there was no explanation in court for the pending change of venue application.

Motions to switch the venue are usually filed when it is thought that the defendant would not get a fair and unbiased trial at the current location, maybe as a result of a biased pool of potential jurors. Judge Enrique Camarena of the San Diego Superior Court stated Monday that the motion was anticipated to be for a different courtroom inside San Diego County, although change of venue requests occasionally relocate trials completely outside of a county.

Since his arrest in October 2021 in relation to the disappearance and alleged murder of his wife, who has not been seen or heard from since January 7, 2021, Millete, 43, has been detained without being granted bail and is still in jail.

According to the prosecution, Millete recruited family members and sorcerers to try to persuade May to abandon her plans to divorce her husband. But after May vanished, his attempts to persuade her to stay in the marriage unexpectedly came to an end.

If found guilty of murder and a felony count of possessing an assault weapon, Millete could spend up to 25 years or maybe his entire life in state prison.
