With its yearly Star Spangled Classic on Saturday, June 28, Athens is getting ready to celebrate America’s 249th Independence Day a few days early. Southeast Clarke Park will host the ceremony. There will be a big fireworks show, live music, food, and family-friendly activities throughout the evening.
The Lexington Road fields will be the scene of festivities starting at 6 p.m. Free attractions for kids and families include a photo booth, face painting, inflatables, carnival rides, and more. Throughout the evening, food trucks will be present.
Prior to the fireworks display, the Funk Brotherhood will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. At around 9:30 p.m., fireworks will be set off from the Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center, and spectators can see them from specific spots around the park.To expand, click Athens-Clarke County Unified Government is the source.
Shuttle service available
Free shuttles will run frequently from Whit Davis Elementary School, the World-of-Wonder Playground parking lot, and the Wal-Mart off Lexington Road to facilitate parking. At 5:30 p.m., the shuttle and parking lots will open.
The event is being hosted by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. According to the city, park regulations will be enforced, which include prohibitions on smoking, drinking, personal fireworks, and grills. Pets are not permitted.

The Star Spangled Classic will be rescheduled for Friday, June 27, if severe weather is predicted for Saturday. The times of all events will not change.
