Fontana guy who answered the door following a 911 call is shot dead by police, who claim he held a pistol

Fontana police shot and killed a man who allegedly flashed a pistol at officers responding to a 911 call early Sunday morning, sparking an investigation.

Kevin Reyes Portillo, 31, was shot in an apartment in the 9100 block of Date Street just after 1 a.m. on Sunday after allegedly pointing a gun at officers who answered the door.

Police were summoned to the complex in response to a 911 call reporting domestic violence. Portillo was treated at the site before being sent to a local hospital, where he died, according to officials.

Fontana Police Officer Steve Reed was unable to immediately say how many cops responded to the scene, how many opened fire on Portillo, or how many times he was shot.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on its investigation of the incident.

The California Department of Justice investigated the Fontana Police Department in connection with the death of Jaime Valdez in 2023. The investigation is underway.

Last year, the agency spent nearly $1 million to settle with a man who claimed that detectives pressured him into confessing to a crime that never occurred during a 17-hour questioning period.
