In response to Republican-led gerrymandering attempts in Texas, the California Federation of Labor Unions, or AFL-CIO, unanimously approved calling a special election this year to redraw the state’s congressional district borders.
Unless Texas halts its partisan redistricting plans, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom indicated he will hold a special election during the first week of November to allow voters to choose a new congressional map.
That push coincides with California Democrats’ announcement that they are considering new political maps that may strengthen Democratic incumbents in crucial battleground districts while eliminating up to five Republican-held House seats in the state, including Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Escondido).
Republicans in Texas are entitled to five additional congressional votes, according to President Trump. They do not have the right to rig the 2026 election, though. California s unions refuse to stand by as democracy is tested, said federation President Lorena Gonzalez, a former state Assemblymember located in San Diego.

Gonzalez stated on Wednesday that California Labor is united in our determination to oppose President Trump’s anti-worker agenda.
In sectors like construction, healthcare, education, entertainment, and logistics, the labor union represents about 2.3 million people in 1,300 unions.
According to Gonzalez, the federation intends to organize its members in support of the redistricting initiative.
