UCSD announces ‘pivot grants’ thanks to Prebys Foundation gift

The first beneficiaries of a grant program designed to support the preservation of San Diego’s biomedical research industry have been revealed by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

In response to the Trump administration’s abrupt reduction in federal funding for biomedical research, the action was made possible by a $1 million donation from the Prebys Foundation.

“Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said in a statement that UC San Diego is a research powerhouse at the forefront of life-changing technological breakthroughs and medical advancements that benefit patients worldwide.”

We are extremely appreciative of the Prebys Foundation’s imaginative support of UC San Diego researchers, which aims to enable them to carry out their ground-breaking research in spite of the campus’s financial difficulties.

The pivot grant program was created to assist UCSD academics in their early to mid-career stages who are working on health-related projects and whose federal funds were impacted in the fiscal year 2024–2025. Grant terminations, stop-work orders, postponed Notices of Award, and unforeseen budget cuts were all considered eligible disruptions.

Barbara Jung, the gift’s primary investigator and assistant vice chancellor, stated that the program’s goals are to safeguard scientists and maintain momentum.

Whole research teams can fail when federal cancellations or delays disrupt important research. To ensure it doesn’t occur here, this program steps in.

Each applicant was required to show the wider dangers to their scientific advancement, lab operations, and research staff in addition to the financial impacts of the disruption on their research.

“We at the Prebys Foundation are committed to safeguarding the promise of science, not only the discoveries it makes, but also the individuals who enable them,” stated Grant Oliphant, president and CEO of the Prebys Foundation.

The goal of these funds is to prevent innovative research and audacious ideas from being lost to the effects of time. One of the gems of our region’s innovation ecosystem is UC San Diego and its staff, and we are honored to contribute to maintaining its momentum.
