LA28 unveils 2028 Olympic schedule with historic event shuffle

The LA28 organizing group unveiled a preliminary calendar for the 2028 Olympics on Monday, which includes a historic change from swimming to track and field.

The men’s and women’s 100-meter races will take place over the first two days of the track and field competition on July 15–16, 2028, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The triathlon, which will take place on July 15 along the Venice coastline, will be the first medal event of the Games.

On July 29, there will be gold and bronze medal competitions in 16 team sports and finals in 19 individual sports, which will result in the greatest number of medals.

The competition will end on July 30 with a marathon and swimming at SoFi Stadium.

On July 14, starting at 5 p.m., the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium will share the opening ceremony. The Coliseum will host the closing ceremony on July 30 starting at 6 p.m.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that surfing would be a part of the games at Tresholds, the famous group of surfing locations in Orange County that stretch from northern San Diego County to southern San Clemente.

Later this year, a more comprehensive schedule that includes medal events and gender order will be made public.

According to LA28, the 844 ticketed events’ schedule was planned in consultation with Olympic Broadcasting Services, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board, and international federations of the sports that will be featured at the games in order to accommodate both U.S. and international television broadcasts.

On Monday, LA28 leaders will join the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks in celebrating the PlayLA initiative’s one million enrollments. The initiative, which offers accessible and reasonably priced sports programming to kids aged 5 to 17, received $160 million from LA28 and the IOC.

The program also encourages children with physical limitations to participate in adaptive sports including paraequestrian, adaptive swimming, and seated volleyball.
