Some Clarkesville city water users on the south side of town are still under a boil water advisory. A water main ruptured on Spring Street, prompting the precautionary advice to be issued Wednesday morning, July 1.
According to Joe Deputy, director of public works for Clarkesville, heavy rains on Tuesday exposed a lengthy water main in the stormwater ditch and washed away a culvert. “It blew apart without the weight on the main,” Deputy stated.
Despite being isolated, the leak prevented city water customers from getting water at Dunkin’ Donuts, Russ Circle, and Spring Street. By Wednesday afternoon, a public works crew had fixed the line, according to the Deputy.
Until further notice, the Boil Water Advisory is in force. Before drinking, cooking, or making baby food with tap water in the impacted areas, customers are encouraged to heat it to a rolling boil for at least two minutes.
In just a few hours, Clarkesville received 4.7 inches of rain from the storm that blew across Northeast Georgia on July 1. According to the weather forecast, summer storms should subside by the weekend of July 4.
