Alonso’s 3 hits help Mets overcome loss of pitcher Canning in a 4-0 win over Braves

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-0 Thursday night, splitting the four-game series despite losing starting pitcher Griffin Canning to injury in the third inning. Pete Alonso had three hits and an RBI.

After losing 10 of their previous 11 games, the Mets defeated the Braves 7-3 on Wednesday night to regain their lead in the NL East, one half game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Before sustaining a left ankle injury on a non-contact play while attempting to sprint off the field, Canning pitched two 2/3 shutout innings. Carlos Mendoza, the manager of the Mets, stated after the game that it appeared to be an Achilles injury. To ascertain the extent of the damage, the team stated that he will have imaging done.

Four relievers kept the Braves to two hits the rest of the way after Canning left. Canning was replaced by Austin Warren (1-0), who pitched 2 1/3 one-hit innings.

Alonso extended the advantage with a run-scoring hit in the fifth inning after Tyrone Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly against Grant Holmes (4-7) in the fourth. In the sixth, Jeff McNeil delivered a single that scored two runs.

As they debuted their blue alternative uniforms with the word “New York” inscribed on the front, the Mets prevailed.

Over five innings, Holmes walked three and struck out six, giving up two runs and six hits.
