JC Cavin returns to Piedmont as head men’s basketball coach

has been announced as Piedmont’s Head Men’s Basketball coach making his return to the Lions following four seasons as an assistant from 2020-2024. He most recently served as an assistant at the University of North Georgia during the 2024-25 season.

“I am humbled and honored to be named the head coach at Piedmont University and excited to come back to such a great institution,” Cavin said. “I want to thank Coach Peeples and President Criser for their belief in me to lead this program. Greg Neeley, Barclay Radebaugh, Dan Evans, and so many others have poured into me and molded me into the man and coach I am today.”

During his time with the Nighthawks, the team went 18-14 with a .500 record in league play within the Peach Belt Conference. The team advanced to the PBC semifinals and had junior guard AJ White named to the second team all-conference listing.

In the summer of 2025, Cavin was selected as a participant in the NCAA Basketball Coaches Academy and traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana. During the academy, selected participants were trained in a variety of areas that encourage effective coaching at the intercollegiate level, with a focus on the holistic well-being and development of the student-athlete.

“We will work tirelessly to build upon the foundation that they have laid before us,” Cavin stated. “I am excited to work with our student-athletes and pour into them not only as basketball players but as men.”

While at Piedmont, Cavin helped lead some of the recent superstars for the Lions including Ryan Jolly who earned All-South Region and All-CCS First team honors during his career. Also during Cavin’s time as an assistant with Piedmont, Jordan Foote concluded his outstanding career as he broke numerous school record and earned all-conference honors.

The Lions totaled 49 wins during those four season and posted a program-best 16 wins in the 2023-24 season. Piedmont’s offense was electric that season posting the eighth-best scoring average in the country at 87 points per game.

Cavin oversaw all film duties while at Charleston Southern and assisted in recruiting efforts for the Buccaneers. In his role with the team, Cavin also was responsible for creating scouting reports, producing graphics and videos for social media and overseeing the team’s social media accounts.

The Buccaneers finished the 2018-19 season with an 18-16 mark overall and a semifinal appearance in the Big South Tournament as well as a CIT berth where they claimed the program’s first postseason win. The team also made a Big South Tournament Quarterfinals appearance in 2019-20.

Cavin got his coaching start following high school where he served as an Assistant Coach at St. James Middle School in 2013-14.

His playing career began in 2014 at Columbia International University where he played three seasons becoming the program’s all-time leader in assists and finished his career third in steals and fifth in scoring. Cavin played his final season at Charleston Southern as a graduate transfer appearing in nine games during the 2017-18 season.

Cavin earned his bachelor of science in business organizational leadership and bible from Columbia International University in 2017. He completed his master’s degree in organizational leadership from Charleston Southern in 2020.

“I can’t wait to get to work and continue to push the program forward and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Cave Arena this season,” said Cavin.
