8-Year-Old Boy Involved in Shooting of 12-Year-Old in Jersey City Apartment

JERSEY CITY, N.J. —  Police are investigating after an 8-year-old boy shot a 12-year-old inside a Jersey City apartment early Friday morning.

According to police reports, at about 2:30 a.m., the 8-year-old boy retrieved a handgun from inside the apartment located at 25 Sal-Laf Court and let off a round, striking the 12-year-old in the right tricep.

The graze wound was non-life threatening. The 12 year old was transported to Bayonne Hospital by another family member, authorities said.

Officials say the incident occurred earlier this week in a residential building, leaving the 12-year-old with injuries that are currently being treated at a local hospital. The condition of the victim has not been disclosed.

Police responded quickly to the scene and are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The 8-year-old boy was taken into custody and is now in the care of child protective services, as legal proceedings and further investigations continue.

“This is a tragic situation involving very young children,” a police spokesperson said. “We are taking every step to understand how this happened and to ensure the safety of all residents.”

Authorities are reminding parents and guardians about the importance of keeping firearms secured and out of reach of children to prevent such incidents.

Any charges are pending at the moment, and the investigation remains ongoing.
